In Brandon, Manitoba, Canada, condom social marketing is taking an innovative approach by making condoms available to taxi cab passengers. This is part of a larger campaign, “Take care down there,” which encourages residents to practice safer sex. Darlene McDonald, a public health nurse with the Brandon Regional Health Authority, says, “It’s new for us to be that visible with messaging about sexual stuff.”
Manitoba has the highest rate of STDs in Canada, though recent increases in chlamydia, gonorrhea and HIV may be due to recent increases in testing availability.
The condoms in cabs will only be available Thurs-Sat. nights, in dispensers shown in the photo above.
It’s exciting to see these fresh, creative ways of increasing condom availability and promotion of safer sex. What do you think we can learn from campaigns like this in Washington, D.C.?Credit to Macleans.ca for the photo and information about the campaign.
